Nutrition in Cabbage

Cabbage is a vegetable, which is formed with many leaves layered from the core or the stem, which finally looks very unique. It is called as Brassica oleracea in the scientific form from the family of Brassicaceae. Many good things about cabbage, worth mentioned and discussed are its enrichment of fibers, fast growth and have the high storage ability.

Cabbage is a regular recipe in curries and salads throughout the world. Most prominent dishes prepared with cabbage are sauerkraut and Kimchee. Other uses of them are in the form of pickles, steaming, stewing, braising, salads and sautéing.

Though cabbages initially found in Britain and Europe, they have spread to many of the other countries in the world. After these two places, they had been spread to Egypt and Mesopotamia and then to Greece and Rome, who used them more as medicinal purposes.  Sequentially, they were found and grown in the Americas and Asia. 

Later they were found prominently in Germany, Ireland, Russia and used cabbage to pickle and preserve long. These were used by Dutch sailors as a good food that prevents scurvy, which happens because of ship voyages for long duration. The journey of cabbage continued to Australia and Norforlk Island. Russians call cabbages as Kopusta. 

Most, in fact, half of the production of cabbage in the world are found in the People’s Republic of China with over 25 million tonnes. The major production is followed by other countries, India, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Ukraine, Indonesia, Poland, US, Romania etc.

History of Cabbage

Though the exact history of cabbages, has to be still explored, the present data says that they were initially existent in Europe and Britain. Domestication over here had been started long before around 1000 BC. It had become a prominent and familiar part of the cuisine in Europe. A frequent variant of cabbage called savoy, however, had started cultivation from the 16th century.

Coming to the interesting facts of cabbage, it is one of the oldest vegetable, which had been cultivated much before the 16th century. The largest cabbage ever cultivated till now is about 62.71 kg, grown in Alaska in the year 2012 and the longest cabbage role to the length of 15.37 meters.

Cabbage is the national food considered in Russia. Since, cabbage has been used primarily for culinary purposes, it has the largest dish made from cabbage had took place weighed around 925.4 kilograms. Imagine the size!!

An interesting legendary saying about cabbage to the children is that the babies do come from the patches of cabbages. Another interesting belief about cabbage in Egypt is to have cabbage in large quantities, before consumption of the hard drinks, as the cabbage reduces the effects of drinks and also consumption of cabbage could increase the ability of consumption of more drink. It is still believed that cabbage added with slight vinegar is a good remedy for a hangover. 

The expression of ‘cabbage headed’ represents a foolish or a stupid human. The word ‘cabbaged’ means the expression of state of exhaustion. ‘Cabbagetown’ is an expression of a big city which has been running down.

Cabbage Tree

These cabbage plants and trees take almost two years of time to be grown and the production starts within a year from three months of planting. They grow around about 16 inches to 24 inches tall, during the first year and grow almost till 6.6 feet after its complete mature state in the second year. The roots of the cabbage are shallow and fibrous. These roots can penetrate up to 2 meters in the soil. 

The flowers of cabbage are very large and arranged with four petals in perpendicular form. The heads of cabbage are heavy and weigh till 4 kilograms. The seedlings of cabbage are thin and in cordate, heart shaped. 

Cabbage Description

The linear and uniform, dense-leave heads give them the shape of round. The color of the vegetables does vary as pale green, white and purple, though green cabbage is quite often available in many places. 

The shape of the present cabbage has been transformed from different shaped when they were cultivated in its early stages of existence. The old cabbages used to look with large heads, large leaves with big and thick stems. 

Available Varieties of Cabbage

Cabbages are cultivated in multiple colors, shapes and textures of the leaves. When it comes to color these are available in red, purple, green and white. Shapes of them do vary as an oblate, pointed and round. Textures of leaves are varied as smooth, firm, loose and crinkled etc. The first varieties of cabbage are kale and nonheading cabbage, which was found to be domesticated during 1000 BC. 

  • Savoy: These cabbages have curly leaves, with a tender texture and mild flavor.
  • Spring Greens: These are seen and grown as loose-headed. These are generally steamed after slicing them to consume.
  • Green: The cabbages of this kind vary in color from light green to dark green and the heads are found as pointed heads.

Nutrients in Cabbage

Cabbage has been part of a healthy diet, because of it being a good source of fiber, vitamin C and beta-carotene. It is a good store and source of photo-chemicals. The other vitamins contained in it are B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 and Vitamin K. However, cabbage should not be consumed when contaminated, as might not be good for health.
