Pear Nutritional Benefits

Pears are sweet, juicy and delicious fruits in unique shapes. Their special nutrient qualities make them more popular. This fruit is from Pyrus family, which is the same family of apples, loquat and medlars etc.  This word pear is derived from Latin. And its related word Perry represents the historical presence of these pear trees. 

These fruits are used for eating directly and cooking as well. They taste much better when stewed with honey. They are intake fruits in various forms like juice, dried fruits, jams, jellies. Pear juice is also called as pear cider or simply perry. 

Pears are soft and anyone can have it as it is less allergenic than the other fruits. Since it is less allergenic, it is often introduces as the first fruit juice to the infants, however, is not supposed to give in more quantity. 

Presently, the cultivation of pears is found in China, US, Italy, Argentina, Spain, India, Turkey, South Korea and Belgium and Asian and European pears are more popular and familiar.

Pear fruits are native to the regions of Europe and Africa. Presently the major production of pear fruits is done in China with comparatively larger production than all the other countries. The next higher productions are found in the United States, Italy, Argentina sequentially. 

Pear Tree Information

Pear trees bear the same name as a pear. These trees are grown widely in the world for its fruits as well as ornamental plants too. These trees are grown about 10 to 17 meters tall. Most of these trees are deciduous and so are grown once in a year. However, special rare varieties of pears which are grown in Asia are grown year long, making the tree ever green. These trees can withstand very cold temperatures even from -20 to -400 C, with the exception of the rare evergreen species which can withstand only till -150 C. Pear trees are well grown in suitable cool temperate climates. 

Small white flowers with varied yellow and pink touch up are blossoming with five petals to these trees. These flowers look silvery hairy in some special species of these trees. These leaves are shaped narrow to wide oval shaped. 

The shape of the fruit most usually in regular pyriform, and varies to oblate or globose shaped. The shape varies and sometimes become close to the shape of apples. The seeds are sown to grow the trees very easily. 

Pear trees are good resources of strong wood. This wood is well preferred for the manufacture of furniture and woodwind instruments, like guitars, violins and piano keys, decorations for veneering etc. These wood products made from pear trees are of high quality. Wood carving is also another application like to make spoons, stirrers and scoops used in kitchen. This wood does not influence the flavor and color with the usage of these kitchen utensil items. Pear wood is also used as firewood, which emits aromatic smoke. This smoke has special aroma or flavor to the meat and tobacco. Many other wooden items are also made like umbrella handles, brush backs and measuring instruments like a T square for engineering drawings and set squares. What makes the wood to be used for multiple wooden applications is as it does not warp.

The shape of pears is unique and the word pyriform is used to represent shapes of any object similar to the shape of pear fruit.

These fruits are picked from its trees before they are fully ripe, when they raw in green color. They are easily ripened when they are stored and placed in room temperature. The process with ripe will be rigorous and faster when placed near bananas and slows down when refrigerated. To check the ripeness of pears, apply small thumb pressure on its neck and move it towards the end of the fruit. If it is ripe, it gives gentle pressure, and if it feels firm it is not yet. When they peeled off, after removing its outer skin, it should be refrigerated and can stay fresh for 2 to 3 days of time. The outer skin of pears is very thin and varies slightly with various cultivars. 

The flesh of Asian fruits is firm, whereas European pears become more juicy and soft after ripe. The flesh is in pulpy and crunchy in white color. The seeds within these fruits are inedible and tiny. 

Varieties of Pear available

There are about 3000 varieties of pears are found and available in the world, according to the data made available by Pear Bureau Northwest. Majorly three species of pears are available named European pear, white pear and Nahsi pear. European pears are cultivated and grown in Europe, white pears in China and Nashi pears grown in a few countries in Asia, especially in the eastern part of it. Special pear varieties called rootstocks are grown as ornamental trees. Regionally other pear fruits are named as Anjou pears, Bosc pears, Seckel pears, red Anjou pears, comic pears and French butter pears. 

Varieties of Asian pear fruits are Ichiban Nashi, Shinsieki, Nijisseki and Shinsui. Varieties of European fruits include Comice and Bartlett.

Pears have rich dietary fiber and also Vitamin C. These nutrients are found more in the skin of peas rather than its flesh, so it is good to eat these fruits along with its skin. Other useful nutrients found in these fruits are antioxidants and minerals like iron, copper, manganese, copper and magnesium. Pears have less amounts of benzoates and salicylates, which does not cause allergy in the consumer body. These are good laxative fruits as most of its fibers are insoluble.
