Guava Nutritional Value

Guava is an exotic tropical fruit tasting with a unique sweetness with very thin peel over it. It is a very usual garden fruit in many houses. Guava is also called as Apple Guava. It is represented as Psidium guajava as its scientific name which are from the myrtle family.


These fruits are not only food for human beings, but also for birds and mammals. These are generally eaten directly or with spread of salt and cayenne powder. This is the fruit with lots of fiber and vitamin C and even the diabetes can consume without threat of sugar levels to increase.

Guava trees take generally two to eight years to grow and mature when planted from the seeds. The height of these trees ranges to be not very small and not very big. The leaves of this plant are very dark green colour and are shaped elliptical. The flowers of these plants are in white colour with five petals. The wood from its trees are used for meat smoking in some places like Hawaii and also used as barbecue competitions throughout the US.

Guava is native to Mexico from Central America and also from northern South America. The name Guava had been derived from the Spanish word, guayaba.

The fruit looks in oval shape and sometimes in round shape also depending on the type of species. The outer skin looks green before ripening and gradually changes to yellow, light green or maroon after ripe. It tastes sweet or sour depending on species. The pulp inside generally tastes as a blend of sweet with variying ration of sour. It tastes in between the strawberry and pear. The colour of the pulp looks from off white to the deep pink. There are seeds present in the core of the fruit. They have varied hardness, which depend on the species used. The flavor of this fruit is similar to the lemons.

The fruits of guava are especially consumed beverage in Mexico. This fruit is also a small blend of the alcoholic beverages. They are also used as dried snacks, salads, desserts, fruit bars, sauces and artisan candies. These ripen fruits are used for cooking in some countries and its juice is common in many countries.

This is a major ingredient for jellies, jams and also marmalades because of its pectin content available in it. Guavas, especially red ones are used as the base of the products to minimize the acidity. The tea made from the guava tea leaves and fruits are said to have medicinal values used in Brazil.

It is also called as guayaba in Spanish and pera in the Western Indian Ocean. It is widely called as amrood in India and Pakistan, where this term has the meaning of pear in the languages of Arabic and also Turkish.
